How I Make My Shields
From raw materials to a finished story.
At Forgeheim, it’s all about passion, craftsmanship, and details. Every shield I build is unique—handmade with care and respect for both durability and history. I use modern techniques and a few practical shortcuts, but always with the same goal:
To create beautiful, durable shields that honor the legacy of the Viking Age.
Here’s a step-by-step look into my process:
1. Choice of Materials
- Stronger
-
Lighter
-
More durable
I purchase the shield bosses from trusted blacksmiths and suppliers who offer high-quality, historically inspired designs.
For the edges, I use faux leather—a practical and weather-resistant material that gives the shield a clean and professional finish.
2. The Foundation Work
Once the materials are chosen, the actual construction begins.
-
I cut out the shape of the shield
-
I sand the surface to create a smooth base
- I carve shallow grooves to imitate joined wooden planks for an authentic feel
Then paint or burn the chosen design -
I attach the handcrafted grip board to the back
-
I fasten the shield boss using solid steel screws
- Finally, I stitch the faux leather along the edge, giving it a clean and refined finish
3. Surface Treatment & Painting
Here is where each shield gains its soul.
-
Some shields are treated with oil to bring out the natural grain of the wood.
-
Others are hand-painted with patterns inspired by Norse mythology, runes, and historical findings—or with a fully customized design.
-
4. Details & Finishing Touches
Last but not least, the shield receives its faux leather edge. This not only reinforces the construction but also gives the shield a beautiful, finished appearance.
Here, I also perform a final quality check to ensure that every shield meets the high standard I strive to deliver.
5. A Shield with a Soul
Every Forgeheim shield carries its own story.
It’s created to be more than just an object – it’s a piece of art, a part of a legacy, and a link between you and history.
I’m planning to create photos and videos showcasing parts of my craftsmanship.
